In today’s society there are many work environments where the office space is shared with either an open office concept or cubicles. So, what are the ‘do’s’ and ’don’ts’ one should follow when working in this type of environment? Here are a few tips.
Noise. Since those around you can hear you, yes, even through those cubicle walls, keeping your music down is essential. Not everyone is going to appreciate your unique sense of music taste. If you can, use headphones. Also, keep phone conversations to a minimum and at a decent volume. Try not to have personal calls, if you need to make a personal call, clock out for a break.
Be respectful of space. If you have a cubicle, make sure your decorations are suitable for the environment you are in. Once again, not everyone is going to like your taste, so try to be a minimalist with just a few personal touches to make the area comfortable for you to work in. Being respectful can pertain to other areas as well. If you use the last of something, replace it. If you take the last of the coffee, make a new pot. It’s all about respecting others around you.
Participate. No one wants to keep their head down all the time. If your company is hosting an event, go. Participating isn’t just for you but shows others you are part of the team. You don’t have to attend every event, unless you want to, but making an appearance here and there will boost your morale and help you relate better to those around you.
These are just a few ways you can become a better co-worker and office friend. Everyone has their own challenges and goals and keeping up with office etiquette can help reduce office stress and allows you to get to know your co-workers better (that’s where the participation comes in). Always be respectful, courteous and considerate.
