Workloads have never been as stressful as they are today. Often, we are working on more than one project, multiple workloads, meetings, traveling for work, sometimes more. When the stress of all this comes crashing down, how do we keep up with healthy habits? Stress can lead to headaches, stomach and digestive issues, illness, insomnia and high blood pressure among other ailments. Above all, it weakens the immune system and can contribute to depression and heart disease. As a working community, it has never been more important to learn the steps needed to help manage workplace stress.
When tension rises, it’s easy to fall into poor eating habits. Make sure you consistently eat healthy meals, avoid alcohol, and find a way to routinely exercise. It’s also important to make time for hobbies or activities outside the working world. Build on healthy sleep habits; going to bed and waking at the same time every evening and morning are key.
With the digital age upon us, it’s easy to be available no matter what, 24 hours a day. However, your work life needs to remain a separate place from your home life. It might mean turning off digital devices while at home, not checking emails, and even sending work-related calls to voicemail. Establishing the boundaries between work and life will help reduce the stress that comes with this type of conflict.
Take time for yourself and family. Use those vacation days to take a family trip or just relax at home. Try deep breathing exercises or meditation practices to learn to focus on the here and now instead of what might be waiting on your desk tomorrow.
Above all else, if stress is rearing its ugly head, get support. Talk with friends and family. Speak with your supervisor to create an effective plan to manage projects. Asking for help sooner rather than later will reduce stress and make your work life that much easier.
