Building a Business Rapport – How to have that first Conversation.

It’s time. You’ve made the appointment, you’ve done all your work, now it’s your moment to sit down face-to-face with the business owner and talk about yellow page advertising. But how do you get the conversation rolling? According to YP Talk, although some people can start up a conversation with ease, others could use a few tricks to help get rid of those jitters.

  1. Take a deep breath. If you let the business owner talk 80% of the time you will be considered courteous and trustworthy. They will let you know when it’s time to switch from chit chat to business.
  2. Start by making the first move. Take the initiative. You’ll create energy and project yourself as confident.
  3. Find common ground. Fast. It could be anything from education and kids, to sport teams and hobbies. Look around. What pictures are out to help give you a clue and get started.
  4. Have your go-to questions ready. Ask if anything has changed with their business over the past year or if their kids are in sports and how the team is doing this year. People like to talk about themselves.
